The AES Corporation operates as a global power company. The company owns and operates two businesses, Generation and Utilities. The Generation business owns and/or operates power plants to generate and sell power to wholesale customers, such as utilities and other intermediaries. It generates electricity through various sources, which include coal, gas, hydroelectric, biomass, wind, and solar energy. The Utilities business owns and/or operates utilities to distribute, transmit, and sell electricity to end-user customers in the residential, commercial, industrial, and governmental sectors. As of December 31, 2009, The AES Corporation owned a portfolio of electricity generation and distribution facilities with generation capacity of approximately 40,300 megawatts and distribution networks serving approximately 11 million people in 29 countries. The company was founded in 1981 and is based in Arlington, Virginia.
